I reached Vientiane by a night train from Bangkok. I was not able to book anything from my home country because it is quite hard to find hotels online but I have to say that it was surprisingly easy to arrange everything as soon as I arrived there. You really have to plan your time and be aware that public transportation takes a long time. In some places there are only few buses that leave everyday. It was an adventure in an untouched surrounding and landscape.
Be flexible with your schedule is very important because it allows you to spend more days in certain places you didn't consider before as I did when I arrived in Champasak and I found Champasak Spa, a wonderful and relaxing place located in from of Mekong river!
Renting a bicycle to reach sightseeings is probably the easiest and best option you have!
I found Laos very nice in terms of natural landscape but I would have preferred to spend there less days (10 were really a lot!) because despite nature there is not that much to see in terms of architecture compared to other countries as Cambodia or Thailand.
PS never forget to try the delicious french bakeries you will find during your trip: absolutely wonderful!!!
